This Eagle Scout Court Of Honor is hereby called to order. May Eagle Scout candidate Patrick Nguyen step forward. (wait for Patrick to face audience)
To earn the Eagle Scout rank, scoutings highest award, a young man expends a great deal of time and effort. Today, to honor his accomplishments, we shall follow a pattern which we call "Lighting the Eagle Trail."
Eagle Scout candidate Patrick Nguyen will now light the "Spirit of Scouting" candle.
(PATRICK lights the blue candle on the table in front of the pulpit.)
This lighted candle represents the Sprit of Scouting. The Spirit of Scouting embodies the fine principles of the Scout Oath and Law; it is a shining beacon of inspiration for all that will follow it. Once a boy enters Scouting, the Scout Law that he promises to obey becomes a guide to all of his activities. Alone, this light may be feeble, but when multiplied by more than three and a half million boys in Scouting, it can become powerful indeed.
The Trail of the Eagle represents the hard to reach heights that an Eagle Scout must surpass to achieve scoutings highest honor.
Eagle Scout candidate, Patrick Nguyen, now look back for a moment upon the peak you have climbed, look at the experiences you have encountered in your ascent. These experiences should not be forgotten.
You should benefit by making sure adverse experiences do not occur again. Experience is a valuable teacher, if you heed its teachings.
Do you remember when you were at the base of the peak taking your first step on the Eagle Trail? In September of the year 1997, you joined Boy Scouts Troop 997 and made Scout. After you began to meet with troop 299, your Eagle Scout journey took flight.
(Alina pauses as Poster Bearer walks out. Poster Bearer walks out to center stage and stand facing audience.)
With that first step you began to grow physically, mentally, and morally. You started living the Scout Oath and Law.
Soon you earned the TENDERFOOT rank in which you learned the symbolism inherent in the Scout badge.
(Alina pauses as Poster Bearer walks out. Poster Bearer walks out to center stage and stand facing audience.)
You learned that there are three points of the trefoil which stand for the parts of the Scout Oath: duty to God and country, duty to others, and duty to yourself. Pointing skyward is the sign of the north. Taken from the mariners compass, it is a reminder of your duty to God and your obligation to others. In
adding the shield of the United States, you are further reminded of your duty to your country. You pledge to support and preserve its freedom.
You learned of the important ideals in scouting: truth and knowledge. These are symbolized by two stars on either side of the badge. These stars are like those of the great outdoors which you have enjoyed on hikes and camp outs.
From here the trail led through basic outdoor skills to the SECOND CLASS rank.
(Alina pauses as Poster Bearer walks out. Poster Bearer walks out to center stage and stand facing audience.)
The Second Class badge with the corners of the scroll turned up in the Scout smile admonished you to "Be Prepared." The overhand knot below reminds you to do a good turn daily.
You began to work harder, and almost before you knew it, you became a FIRST CLASS SCOUT.
(Alina pauses as Poster Bearer walks out. Poster Bearer walks out to center stage and stand facing audience.)
The badge you received is a combination of both Tenderfoot and Second Class, reminding you that there is much more to being a Scout than just attending meetings. The variety of merit badges gave your interest free rein. You took the lead, showing others the way.
It didnt take long before the next obstacle on the trail was overcome and you came to rest on the STAR SCOUT ledge.
(Alina pauses as Poster Bearer walks out. Poster Bearer walks out to center stage and stand facing audience.)
The next rank was to be reached more slowly. The trail had become steeper and the merit badges harder. Fewer Scouts seemed headed in your direction. You looked back down the peak and saw the crowds behind you. You looked up and saw the few above.
With the same determination with which you had started the climb, you continued up the trail. You learned that leadership was "leading," not driving or pushing. Example is best. You then reached the LIFE SCOUT ledge in July of 1999..
(Alina pauses as Poster Bearer walks out. Poster Bearer walks out to center stage and stand facing audience.)
The Life rank is symbolized by a heart with the First Class badge, the badge of Scouting imposed thereon. While the rank of Life Scout is a much-coveted one, the Eagle trail does not end there. Mile by mile, it becomes tougher and more trying. Before the great summit of the Eagle trail can be attained, additional merit badges are needed, and in the meantime, leadership and service to others is not forgotten. Only those with the greatest amount of persistence and courage are able to gain the thrill that comes from reaching the Eagle summit. The candle, which symbolizes Scoutings highest award, the Eagle Scout rank, shall now be lit.
(Life bearer exits from where they came. Eagle bearer enters from middle aisle to center stage.)
Now the original principles, the Scout Oath and Law, have fuller meaning. Your understanding of them is much greater. As a result, your character has unfolded; you have become more of a man. Your leadership ability has expanded into a valuable asset. Your mind has developed and your wisdom increased. We have watched all these things in you, and now that you are at the threshold of your goal, we welcome you, for you have done your climbing in a true Scout-like manner.
Now you stand at the top of the mountain. It is not the end of the trail, or the beginning. Almost your whole life lies ahead of you.
(Eagle bearer exits up the center aisle.)
Pause
This afternoon Patrick Nguyen is a candidate for the rank of Eagle Scout. This is the climax and goal for which this Scout has been working for 5 years. It is an occasion for pride and joy, and time for serious contemplation.
We realize that this is the highest and most coveted rank in all Scouting and is the last major step in the advancement program. Fewer than three percent of all Scouts in the United States reach the Eagle Scout rank. It is therefore right and proper that this court make a careful examination of the Eagle Scout candidate.
The requirements for the Eagle Scout rank are as follows:
- Plan, develop, and carry out a service project, for church, school or community, worthy of an Eagle Scout.
- Appear before a board of review of prominent persons and satisfy them that you have done your best to understand and live up to the Scout Oath and Law and, in all ways, qualify for the Eagle Scout award.
The first consideration in the examination of this Eagle Scout candidate is proficiency in the various crafts and skills prescribed for the Eagle Scout Rank.
Candidate Anthony Lee has presented a record of the various merit badges he has earned. They are:
Art Fingerprinting
Auto mechanics Fire Safety
Camping First Aid
Citizenship in the Community Graphic Arts
Citizenship in the Nation Motorboating
Citizenship in the World Nature
Communications Personal Fitness
Computers Personal Management
Electricity Pulp and Paper
Emergency Preparedness Sports
Environmental Science Swimming
Family Life
The records have been carefully checked. The Candidate has been certified by various merit badge counselors and the troop, crew records show that this candidate has fully qualified for the required merit badges for the Eagle Scout Rank.
Another important consideration for the rank of Eagle Scout is leadership. The candidates record of leadership consists of:
Assistant Patrol Leader
Patrol Leader
Crew Treasurer
We find that this candidate has demonstrated his capacity and willingness to exert his leadership ability in activities that are constructive and worthwhile to his community.
Last, but certainly not least, is the Scouts character. We have interviewed teachers, parents, neighbors, religious leaders, Scout leaders, and others regarding this candidate's character. I would like to introduce a close family friend, ( ? ).
(Alina returns to her seat and ( ? )comes to the right lectern and speaks)
( ? )
( ? ) makes her comments
(( ? ) is seated. Alina Lee steps to right lectern.)
Alina Lee
It is the finding of this Court that this candidate is endeavoring to put into practice in his daily life, the principles of the Scout Oath and Law. We believe he will continue these habits after receiving the rank of Eagle Scout.
By the authority vested in the Court by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America, and by recommendation of various person who have investigated his credentials, his leadership practice, and his character, this Court hereby finds Eagle Scout Candidate Patrick Nguyen qualified for the Eagle Scout Award.
Eagle Scout Candidate Patrick Nguyen, dedicate yourself once again by slowly repeating the Scout Oath. Resolve to uphold forever its principles with the same ambition and perseverance that has brought you this far.
Patrick Nguyen
(Patrick lights the three candles of the Scout Oath, passing on the last candle to Scout Law #1)
(Turns on microphone and makes the Scout Sign.)
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
And to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong
Mentally awake, and morally straight.
Alina Lee
The law of the Eagle Scout is the Scout Law. Eagle Scout Candidate Patrick Nguyen slowly recite the Scout Law, while Crew 299 Boy Scout Anthony Lee adds the explanation of each point and your fellow Scouts of Troop 299 Boy Scouts and Troop 3997 Girl Scouts light the twelve candles on the Troop log.
(Alina Lee is seated. Patrick Nguyen steps to right lectern. 6 girls and 6 boys step to the troop log to light candles.)

Patrick, your conduct along the Trail has been excellent. You have rededicated yourself to the principles of Scouting. You have heard again the call of the Eagle. But, one more thing is important, your future. Would all Eagle Scouts present here this afternoon please come to the Eagles nest? Now Mr. Hui Ly, the crew advisor, will administer the Eagle Charge. (Truong Hui goes to center stage facing Patrick. Truong Hui and Patrick turn on microphones.)
Tr. Hui I charge you to live with honor. To an Eagle Scout, honor is the foundation of all character. He knows that "A Scout is Trustworthy" is the very first point of the Scout Law for a good reason. An Eagle Scout lives honorable, not only because honor is important to him but also because of the vital significance of the example he sets for other Scouts. Living honorably reflects credit on his home, his church, his troops, and his community. May the white of the Eagle Scout badge remind you to always live with honor.
I charge you to be loyal. A Scout is true to his family, Scout leaders, friends, school, and nation. His loyalty to his troop and brother Scouts makes him pitch in and carry his share of the load. All of these help to build loyalty, which means devotion to community, to country, to ones own ideals, and to God. Let the blue of the Eagle Scout Badge always inspire your loyalty.
I charge you to be courageous. Courage has always been a quality by which men measure themselves and others. To a Scout, bravery means not only the courage to face physical danger, but the determination to stand up for what is right. Trusting in God, and with faith in his fellow man, he looks forward to each day, seeking his share of the worlds work to do. Let the red of the Eagle Scout Badge remind you always of courage.
I charge you to be cheerful. To remind the Eagle Scout to always wear a smile, the red, white, and blue ribbon is attached to the scroll of Second Class Scout award that has its end turned up in a smile.
I charge you to give service. The Eagle Scout extends a helping hand to those who still toil up Scoutings trail, just as others helped him in his climb to the Eagle. The performance of the daily Good Turn takes on new meaning when he enters a more adult life of continuing service to others. The Eagle Scout stands as protector of the weak and helpless. He aids and comforts the unfortunate and the oppressed. He upholds the rights of others while defending his own. He will always "Be Prepared" to put forth his best.
You deserve much credit for having achieved Scoutings highest award. But wear your award with humility, ever mindful that the Eagle Scout is looked up to as an example. May the Scout Oath and the Scout Law be your guide for tomorrow and onward.
I will now ask you to make the Scout sign and repeat the "Pledge of the Eagle" after me.
I, Patrick Nguyen.
Realize my obligation to my fellow man
To my home, my country, and my God.
I will at all times do my best to assist others
And to give back more to Scouting than it has given to me.
To live with honor, loyalty, courage and service
And to be a living example of the Scout Oath and Law to the best of my ability.
To this I pledge my sacred honor.
Two.
(Patrick turns off microphone.)
