Dear Scouting Family,
After careful consideration and an extensive review process, Michael Surbaugh has been named as the Boy Scouts of America’s next Chief Scout Executive. Currently serving as Group Director he will take the reins in October from our current Chief Scout Executive, Wayne Brock, who is retiring.
In his role as Group Director since 2014, Surbaugh has demonstrated a record of success and achievement in fundraising, membership and program development. He has developed numerous innovative programs designed to meet the needs of employees, volunteers and youth. In each assignment, he has also worked to extend Scouting’s reach in disadvantaged communities, Native American outreach, and those with Special Needs.
The decision to name Mike as the 13th Chief Scout Executive involved an extensive review and selection process—a process of which involved many of you. For the past several months, we have been working with leaders from across the BSA network to get their thoughts on what qualities, attributes, and values are necessary to successfully lead our organization. We held several listening sessions and had many one-on-one conversations to gather insights that were used to inform our selection process.
In addition to considering all of the contributions from the Scouting family, the committee also conducted a thorough review process in order to determine the leader who fit the position. This was a thoughtful, serious, and careful process as we wanted to ensure the candidate selected properly leads and represents our organization.
We have great confidence that Mike will continue the legacy of leadership to solidify Scouting’s role in the development of America’s youth and to empower our volunteers to deliver the kind of life-changing experiences found only within Scouting. Please join me in welcoming Mike.
Yours in Scouting,
